Community-backed Independent for Lyne Jeremy Miller is shocked but not surprised at a new report revealing no bulk billing medical centres in the Lyne electorate.
“I am not surprised because people have been raising this problem in almost every conversation. I am shocked that the major parties have let it come to this. We’re in the middle of a cost of living crisis and local people can’t access the bulk-billed healthcare that they need. Both major parties have had a chance to fix this when they’ve been in government but they haven’t fixed it.”
A recent national study from Cleanbill has revealed that Lyne is one of ten federal electorates where there are no bulk billing medical centres. As Lyne has one of the lowest median income of all electorates, this indicates a significant stress is being placed on people who can least afford it.
“It should be a right for all of us to have affordable access to see a doctor that we know.” Jeremy Miller says, “People are delaying going to the doctor because they can’t afford it and that’s a real risk to their health.”
“People need relief now, not more talk from politicians”, he said. “We have a pilot program in our area that is getting doctors and nurses to stay in our community long term. That’s not the whole solution, but it’s a start. These are the practical, low-cost solutions that we need. I’ll fight for funding to expand that program through our region.“
“When elected, I'll push for immediate action and real solutions. Let's stop talking about the problem and start fixing it."
Jeremy Miller is the Community Independent for Lyne. He was chosen by community members across the Lyne electorate in response to a twelve month listening campaign aimed at prioritising the local needs of the Lyne electorate which has been ignored by the major parties.
