A new youth survey conducted by Independent candidate for Lyne, Jeremy Miller, has revealed alarming gaps in job opportunities, training, and mental health support for young people in the region. The results highlight the urgent need for investment in local programs to ensure young people can build their futures without having to leave their communities. Key findings from the survey include:
One young respondent suggested that listening to young people in regional areas might be a good place to start: "A youth forum in Canberra with representation particularly from underserviced rural areas like ours would be great. Listening to people from the capital cities who have everything at their fingertips isn’t fixing anything." Miller, a business owner, MidCoast Councillor, and father, says these findings confirm what he has seen firsthand: too many young people in our area are being left behind. "These numbers are deeply concerning but not surprising. We know young people are struggling to find work, access training, and get the mental health support they need. This survey reinforces the urgent need for real investment in our region, not just more talk," Miller said. Miller is calling for increased government funding to support local training programs, better access to apprenticeships, and partnerships between schools and employers to provide clear pathways into the workforce. Mental health remains a pressing concern, with the survey highlighting that half of respondents cannot access the support they need. "That’s unacceptable. We need to bring real mental health services into all of our local communities so that young people aren’t left to struggle on their own," Miller stated. "I'll be consulting more with the community about how we can better treat mental health issues and how we can start earlier, well before they reach crisis point." "It’s time to take action. If we invest in our young people now, we can build a future where they don’t have to leave their communities to succeed. Instead, they can stay close to family and friends, access the training and support they need, and contribute to the growth of our region." Jeremy Miller is the Community Independent for Lyne. He was chosen by community members across the Lyne electorate in response to a twelve-month listening campaign aimed at prioritising local needs, which have been ignored by the major parties. |
A recent national study from Cleanbill has revealed that Lyne is one of ten federal electorates where there are no bulk billing medical centres. As Lyne has one of the lowest median income of all electorates, this indicates a significant stress is being placed on people who can least afford it.
“It should be a right for all of us to have affordable access to see a doctor that we know.” Jeremy Miller says, “People are delaying going to the doctor because they can’t afford it and that’s a real risk to their health.”
“People need relief now, not more talk from politicians”, he said. “We have a pilot program in our area that is getting doctors and nurses to stay in our community long term. That’s not the whole solution, but it’s a start. These are the practical, low-cost solutions that we need. I’ll fight for funding to expand that program through our region.“
“When elected, I'll push for immediate action and real solutions. Let's stop talking about the problem and start fixing it."
