Pre polling and postal votes

Voting before Election Day (Pre-polling)

Most people vote at a polling booth on election day, but if you can’t make it, pre-polling is an option.

  • Pre-polling is early voting available for about 10–12 days before election day.
  • There are limited pre-polling locations in each electorate.
  • Locations are announced after the election date is set.

Voting by mail (Postal voting)

If you can’t get to a polling booth, you can apply for a postal vote:

  • Applications open as soon as the election date is announced.
  • Apply online at the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC): Apply Here.
  • Your ballot papers will be mailed to you via Priority Post:
    • Green paper – House of Representatives
    • White paper – Senate

A word about party mailouts

Political parties often send out postal vote applications, but these are not official ballots. The Electoral Commissioner has warned that these can be misleading.

Remember: You decide how to vote—you don’t have to follow party “how-to-vote” guides.
